The city of Corinth was a very large, busy and immoral city, and this surely contributed to the problems in the church at that time. Paul went to speak to the church at Corinth, reminding them that the gospel which is preached by the apostles of Jesus Christ that they received, states categorically that they are saved only if they keep in memory the truth of how Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures and that He was buried, and rose again the third day according to scripture. He stated that Christ Jesus was seen alive by all the apostles and hundreds of brethren. He tells them that they are to live righteously and sin not, and be not deceived through the deceitfulness of sin, which seeks to enslave them.
He said to them, “Examine yourselves to see if you are living in faith”, Paul was very grieved with that church because he heard that they were not obeying the teachings of Christ. They did not repent of their uncleanliness, and the sex before marriage which some of them were practicing. Paul knew that if they continued down this road without repentance it would lead to destruction, and they would be eternally lost, it was that serious. It makes me think of what Jesus said, in St John 5 v 14, “ behold, thou art made whole; sin no more, lest a worst thing come unto thee”. Paul said, pleading with them, “know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived”, 1 Corinthians 6 v 9.
It is written, “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit which are God’s. 1 Corinthians 6 v 20. Well Paul was saying to them in such a manner that if they were living to glorify Christ then their lives should and must reflect the light of God. I am reminded of the words of Jesus, “ Ye are the light of the world”- “ Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven”, St Matthew 5 v 14 & 16.
Today’s church is very similar to the church of Corinth, for there are many Christians who have given their hearts to Jesus, but will not live in the ways that Jesus has taught them, which they must live by, if they are to enter into the kingdom of God. As Christians we cannot bury our heads in the sand, and say that all will be well, for all will certainly not be well. The Bible likens this way of life to a person who builds a wall of loose stones, using weak cement to hold it together, and then whitening it with whitewash. Well, God will send a mighty storm against such a wall to destroy it. Let us always remember to let God build this wall which represents our lives, which must be built on, Christ Jesus the foundation stone and He will do this if we are obedient to His word, by living righteously.
I will sing the wondrous story of the Christ who died for me;
How He left His home in glory, For the cross on Calvary.
